Ziplining in Mahe Island, Seychelles

Ziplining is the main attraction of SMAC adventures among all the adrenaline-filled activities they provide. You get an opportunity to zip-line through the green forests of Mahe Island in complete safety. I booked it prior to my landing on the island and it is recommended to do so especially if one is travelling during the peak season (April- August) as places may fill up really fast.

Check out a detailed guide on Things to do in Mahe Island

Upon reaching the Constance Ephelia resort, I was taken to the SMAC office in a comfortable buggy which was a blessing as it was quite sunny that morning. After a safety briefing and signing the consent form, I was all geared up with the gloves, helmet and the harness along with the other people in the group. We were around 8 people ranging from 5 years to 30 years of age. Initially, we were provided with a short zip line right in front of their office to give us a teaser of the real experience. This made all of us comfortable regarding the safety of the experience. Later we were taken towards the mountains in the buggies for the actual zip lining experience.

Beautiful views as I climb for the zip line

Upon reaching the mountain, one has to climb some steps to reach the top where the actual zip lining begins. Although it was quite hot, the views along the climb made it all worth it. Green trees of the resort beautifully surround the beach, providing a visual treat. This is the beauty of Seychelles that one can experience multiple treats at the same time. At the end of this climb, I met the rest of the group I was going to zip line with.

As I got geared up for the zipline

There is a total of 8 zip lines, one after another. All of them take you through the beautiful forest at a height ranging from 85m-120m. The activity is extremely safe and every group of around 8 people have two instructors to ensure safety. People of all age groups are allowed to participate. My group had two 4-5 years old girls too who were excited to experience Seychelles activities. Gliding through a forest canopy is one of the must-do activities in Seychelles.

Seychelles Activities: Hiking in Mahe Island

One of the Seychelles activities that excite the visitor, is the hiking in the capital city of Mahe Island. As most of the islands are made of granite rocks, which form the giant boulders guarding the Seychelles Sea and standing as a symbol of this archipelago, the middle of the islands are quite mountainous despite being surrounded by stunning white-sand beaches.

This mountainous region offers some very exciting hiking trails which are not too difficult to access, either by your rented car or a bus ride.

Mount Copolia

The summit of Mount Copolia which stands 500m above sea level can be accessed through the Morne Seychellois National Park. There is a signboard mentioning, “Copolia Trail”, indicating the start of this trail. The trail is completed in around 2 hours with some very steep areas in between. The trail starts on the Sans Souci Road which is approximately 6km from Victoria. There isn’t any proper parking for the cars and one has to park at the side of the road, before starting the trail.

Looking for an easy way to go for the trail? Check out this tour that provides you with the ease of hotel pickup.

On way to Mount Copolia

Anse Major

Getting to the start of this route isn’t easy. The road is pretty windy, narrow and steep and is covered by lush green trees from both sides. It is not a drive for a newbie, faint-hearted driver, let alone reaching it on foot. As I drove through this hill, I saw many people walking by once the bus dropped them off and it didn’t seem a pleasant, fun walk in the humid weather of Seychelles. The only route to get Anse Major on foot is the hiking trail which takes about one and half hour. While driving up the road, a sudden sign can be seen on the right-hand side which marks the start of this trail. Similar to Mount Copolia trail, there isn’t any proper parking place to leave your car before you head for the hike.

Morne Blanc

This trail is near the tea factory in Seychelles, on the Sans Souci Road. The car has to be parked at the tea factory and one has to walk to the start of the trail which is clearly signposted. The hike is almost 90 minutes, including the return hike and isn’t very easy to do. There are many caves along the trail which are camouflaged among the trees and therefore it’s better to not stray from the path. This trail gives stunning views of the island upon reaching the summit.

Signposting for the Morne Blanc Trail

It is advisable to start as early as possible for all of these trails as the climate in Seychelles is quite humid all year round and it can get very hot and sweaty to hike as the day takes the charge.

Seychelles Activities: Diving

Being an island country, diving is a must when one visits Seychelles. Its beaches are clear and immensely beautiful, making it a perfect destination for diving. I went for my first scuba dive in Seychelles and immediately fell in love with this activity. Being a not-so-competent swimmer back then, I wasn’t so confident but went for it nonetheless. I am an ocean lover and my divemaster from Blue Sea Divers in Mahe Island made me fell deeper in love with the ocean that day. Seychelles sea has crystal clear water with perfect visibility, making it a heaven for divers. Diving spots in Seychelles are perfect for any level of diving skills. There are spots for beginners as well as those for experienced divers.

Discover the beauty of Seychelles through these photos!

Most of the dives at Mahe Island are done from the Beau Vallon beach as it is calm and clear for diving. Many people can be found snorkelling on this beach. Big Blue Divers and Blue Sea Divers are the two companies which offer diving at Beau Vallon beach of Mahe Island.

Praslin Island, the home of the heaviest seed in the world, also offers some beautiful diving sites which can be reached from Anse Volbert. Two companies, White Tip Divers and Octopus Divers offer diving in Praslin. Diving sites in Praslin lead to beautiful underwater rock formations to be explored along with frequent sightings of turtles and sharks.

One of the beaches in Praslin

Diving in Aldabra

Another perfect diving site in Seychelles, however very less-known is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Aldabra, which is a nature reserve and the largest raised coral reef in the world. This site is untouched due to its remoteness and therefore not a victim of its own beauty. There is abundant marine life to be seen here including green turtles, endangered Hawksbill turtles and plenty of fishes. To dive here, you must be approved by Seychelles Islands Foundation. There isn’t any accommodation on Aldabra and one must opt-for live abroad dive boats to experience diving in Aldabra.
